Bedtime with toddlers can often feel like a challenge, but with a few strategies in place, you can transform this routine into a peaceful and even enjoyable experience. Over the next few minutes, I’ll walk you through six tips to help improve your toddler's bedtime and make the end of the day smoother for everyone!
1️⃣
Establish a Predictable Routine
The easiest and most effective way to improve your toddler’s sleep is by creating a consistent bedtime routine. This routine should consist of simple, repetitive activities that happen in the same order each night. Whether it’s bath time, reading a book, or a quiet cuddle, a routine provides your child with structure and predictability.
Routines create a sense of security, reducing protests and tantrums when it’s time for bed. Remember, it’s never too late to start! If you don’t already have a routine, today is the perfect time to begin. Your child will quickly learn what to expect, making bedtime much smoother.
2️⃣
Offer Choices
Toddlers love to feel in control, and bedtime is a great opportunity to offer them some independence. By providing your child with simple choices—like picking their pajamas or choosing which book to read—you give them a sense of ownership over the bedtime process.
Toddlers often spend their day being told what to do, so offering choices at bedtime not only empowers them, but it also makes the routine more fun and engaging. When they feel included, bedtime is less of a battle and more of a bonding experience.
3️⃣
Limit Screentime
We all know how much kids love their screens, but screentime and bedtime just don’t mix. The LED blue light emitted by screens can interfere with your child’s natural sleep rhythm, making it harder for them to fall asleep and stay asleep. Plus, screens can be overstimulating, making it difficult for your toddler to wind down and focus on their bedtime routine.
Instead of screens, aim for quality 1:1 time before bed—whether it’s reading a book, talking about your day, or simply cuddling. This connection helps your child relax and prepare for sleep. A good rule of thumb is to eliminate screens at least one hour before bedtime.
4️⃣
Set and Stick to Boundaries
Consistency is key when it comes to bedtime boundaries. As a parent, it’s important to say what you mean and mean what you say. If you promise “one more book,” follow through with that commitment. If you give in to protests or tantrums, your child may learn that pushing back can lead to more books or extra time.
Holding firm to your boundaries, even when it’s hard, sends a clear message to your child. Over time, this consistency reduces bedtime battles and helps them understand what to expect.
5️⃣
Be a Good Role Model
Children are always watching, especially at bedtime! They look to you to learn how to manage emotions and respond to frustration. If you react with calmness and patience, even in stressful moments, your child is likely to mirror that behavior.
It’s also okay to apologize if you lose your temper. Showing your toddler that everyone makes mistakes—and that it’s important to learn from them—helps teach accountability. A calm bedtime environment starts with you, and it can have a lasting impact on your toddler’s emotional development.
6️⃣
Make Bedtime Fun
Finally, bedtime doesn’t have to be all serious business! Infuse a little fun into your routine to make it something your toddler looks forward to.
Here are a few ideas:
• Hop like a bunny to the bedroom.
• Challenge them to see how fast they can put on their pajamas.
• Use a bedtime checklist and let them check off tasks as they go.
• Give them a piggyback ride to bed or read in a silly voice to keep things playful.
By adding a touch of fun, you’ll create positive associations with bedtime, leading to fewer battles and a smoother transition to sleep.
